Mirrors no longer reflect objects. They’ve grown to become a significant reflection of social status. Mirrors have a fan base of people who love designing and decorating homes and have a fascination for collectibles. Any decent mirror collector knows that a mirror must be 100 years old to qualify as an antique or collectible. This article lists 12 antique mirrors that will only grow in value over the years:

Wall Mirrors

Wall mirrors gained popularity towards the end of the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, these mirrors became an essential tool for the nobility and other elites of the society. They became a standard piece in the dining room for butlers to monitor the course of the dinner and intervene when necessary without their presence being too noticeable. These mirrors are widely available and in high demand in the antique market. They come in many different designs, from the Victorian era to those created in the last century under the influence of Art Deco and Art Nouveau. The Pietro Chiesa Rare and Unique 3-Way Wall Mirror by Fontana Arte from Italy costs $46,000.

French mirrors

Often less lavish in terms of molding, French mirrors are simpler and more geometric in appearance. These feature columns, hand-beveled designs, and paneling. These mirrors were commonly hung above the chimney and were thus designed as a statement piece to match the creation of the chimney. A 19th-century Gilt Gesso French Pier Mirror will cost you over $24,000.

Art Nouveau

These mirrors represent designs that return to nature, so their appearances were inspired by natural elements, with a flowing style and soft lines. This mirror style had its greatest heyday from the late 1800s to 1910. A rare Majorelle French Console art nouveau mirror will set you back by $14,500.

Rococo

Rococo mirrors have existed for over 200 years, i.e., from the 17th to the 19th century. Their characteristic shape is oval or rectangular, and they have a flat bottom, noted as the cathedral shape. They were sculpted plaster frames, with many details as their visual designs and some even had paintings on the back of the mirror. The most common motifs were flowers, seashells, birds, and feathers. An antique Rococo mirror with a bronze frame plated 24K gold color will cost you almost $14,000.

Baroque

These antique mirrors are known and widely loved for their gold and silver gilding. They are appreciated for their detailing and intricate works that often contain carvings of fruits, flowers, leaves, angels, and ebony or tortoiseshell inlays. Usually, the best materials are used, and the designs are highly elaborate. A French-Italian bedroom set with a baroque mirror will cost you around $14,000.

Regency

Regency or oval mirrors emerged in the early 19th century and were often decorated with floral motifs, cornices, and columned frames. Frames were finished with gilded gold and natural mahogany, a popular collectible piece in England during the early 1800s. These were primarily found in the vanity collection or were additional parts of the personal dressing desks. A rare pair of Phoenix Bird Federal Regency mirrors costs $9,500.

Art Deco

Art Deco mirrors are all about symmetry, straight lines, and minimalism. Mirrors of this style date back to 1920 and are the newest on the antique market. Therefore, they are easy to find at auctions and online stores specializing in antiques. They are more of a contemporary antique than conventional collectibles. A vintage art deco mirror with a gold painted frame will damage your wallet by $5,000.

Vanity or Toilet Mirrors

Popularly known as the dresser trays, these gained attention towards the end of the 17th century when European elites demanded manufacturing furniture models to organize the utensils and accessories used in the powder and restrooms. Artisans began to include large mirrors in bathroom vanities, a custom the Egyptians had already practiced for centuries. Still, they only arrived in France, Germany, and Italy in the 17th century, where mirrors with hand-painted porcelain backs became famous. They also evolved to include small drawers for better organization with bathroom accessories. A vintage optician’s mirror costs $4,000 on eBay.

Gothic

Popular during the 12th to 16th centuries, these church-style antique decorative mirrors featured ornate scrolling or carving, usually oval with pointed arches at the top and framed with dark walnut or oak wood. A large Gothic Hall Tree mirror costs $3,150.

Floor Mirrors

Commonly known as free-standing mirrors, dressing mirrors, and full-length/ vanity mirrors. They only became familiar in the post-18th century when technology advanced enough to design and produce large pieces. The noble and affluent classes of several European nations were the only ones to own the first cheval mirrors, created in the late 1700s and early 1800s. A good-condition vintage mirror costs $2,000 today.

Georgian

Georgian mirrors heavily influenced interior designs during the late 18th century and early 19th century, originating in Great Britain. They were characterized by having fewer ornaments and carvings on the mirror frames than the baroque style mirrors and being the opposite of it. Rhinestones, beading, and carvings on the top edges of the structures were the only decorations. Most of them were made with dark wood and were often a centerpiece in the dining halls, hallways, lounges, etc. A Burr Burl Amboyna Cushion Framed Mirror costs $2,500.
