Missed the Global Update? Here’s Where the U.S. Truly Ranks in the Worldwide Battle Against Hunger!

In a world of plenty, hunger remains a pressing issue affecting millions. In this article, we delve into the role of the United States in the global battle against hunger. As one of the world’s largest economies, the U.S. is responsible for addressing this challenge. Global hunger is a sobering reality. Over 9% of the world’s population—nearly 700 million—struggle with chronic food insecurity. 

USAID’s Food for Peace

USAID’s Food for Peace program is a cornerstone of U.S. humanitarian assistance. It provides food aid to people in crisis-affected regions worldwide, helping alleviate hunger during emergencies. In the fiscal year of 2022, USAID extended a helping hand by dedicating around $2.6 billion to Title II Food for Peace assistance. This effort involved the acquisition of nearly 1.8 million metric tons of food from the United States, which was distributed to support almost 45 million people in 31 countries.

Global Food Security Act

Enacted in 2016, the Global Food Security Act emphasizes a comprehensive approach to food security. It aims to reduce global hunger and improve nutrition by supporting sustainable agricultural practices and economic development in vulnerable regions. This initial strategy provided a roadmap for effectively implementing Feed the Future, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the 2030 Agenda, demonstrating that real progress can be made in the fight against hunger. 

Feed the Future

Launched in 2010, the Feed the Future initiative is a U.S. government effort to combat global hunger and poverty through agricultural development. It empowers smallholder farmers, promotes sustainable practices, and strengthens food systems. Since its inception in 2010, Feed the Future has made a significant impact, helping 23.4 million more people escape extreme poverty, ensuring that an additional 3.4 million children are no longer stunted, and allowing 5.2 million more families to live without the burden of hunger.

Emergency Food Assistance

The U.S. government also responds to acute hunger crises by providing emergency food assistance through agencies like USAID and the World Food Programme. This aid is critical in natural disasters, conflict, and other emergencies. The Emergency Food Assistance Program supports our farmers and the economy. In fiscal 2022, TEFAP invested $399 million in food purchases nationwide. Moreover, it’s responsible for supplying over 20% of the food that reaches Feeding America member food banks and local hunger relief programs. 

Development Assistance

Beyond food aid, the U.S. provides development assistance to address hunger causes, including poverty, lack of infrastructure, and inadequate healthcare. These initiatives aim to create long-term solutions to food insecurity. In 2022, the United States significantly increased its official development assistance (ODA) to a preliminary total of $55.3 billion. This boost in assistance was primarily driven by the nation’s commitment to supporting Ukraine during a critical time, as well as the rising expenses related to hosting Afghan refugees within its borders. 

Participation in U.N. Initiatives

The United States participates in United Nations initiatives related to food security, such as the Zero Hunger Challenge and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These global frameworks set ambitious targets for ending hunger and improving nutrition by 2030. The Zero Hunger Challenge, initiated by the United Nations Secretary-General at the Rio+20 World Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012, is a global call to action with a heartfelt goal: To inspire people worldwide to join in the effort to end hunger within a single generation.
