Meryl Streep is a Hollywood legend. Whether through her singing or her general acting skills, Meryl Streep has been able to captivate audiences of all ages throughout her career. Her First Name Isn’t Meryl

Meryl Streep’s actual name is Mary Louise Streep. She shares the same names with her mother, her grandmother, and her mother’s best friend. Her father decided to give her the nickname Meryl, which later became the name she gained stardom with. Her father combined the names Mary and Louise to come up with Meryl.

Streep Trained in Opera

As a teenager, Meryl Streep trained in classical music, particularly Opera. Streep discovered her love for music at a very young age. She began her singing lessons with famous vocal coach Estelle Liebling at 12. However, Streep quit singing lessons, claiming she did not enjoy singing something she could not understand or feel.

She Was a Cheerleader

In high school, Meryl Streep was a cheerleader and was even the homecoming queen. As a young girl, Streep participated in various school activities besides cheerleading. She was a part of her school’s student council, in the French Club, and unsurprisingly, even played multiple lead roles in different school productions.

She Applied to Have Her Name Trademarked

Many celebrities with unique names have applied to have their names trademarked at the US Trademark Office. And like these celebrities, Meryl Streep applied to trademark her unique and iconic name in 2018. If the trademark is accepted, Streep will have exclusive rights to use her name across the entertainment industry.

She Graduated From an Ivy League College

Meryl Streep earned herself a Master’s in Fine Arts from the prestigious Yale School of Drama in 1975. While at Yale, she appeared in several productions in a single year alongside her classmate and friend, actress Sigourney Weaver.

She Was Evicted From Her Apartment

Streep was living in New York with actor and partner John Cazale. Cazale was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, which was the cause of the actor’s death in 1978. After the passing of her fiancé, Streep had to pay off costly medical bills, which did not leave her with enough rent money, leading to her eviction.

She Was Married Six Months After the Passing of Her Fiancé

After the sad demise of her John Cazale and her unfortunate eviction, Streep moved in with her brother’s friend Don Gummer, who agreed to sublet a room in his apartment to her. The two eventually fell in love and got married in September 1978. They welcomed four children into the world: a son and three daughters. Two of their daughters followed their mother’s footsteps and became actresses, while one became a model.

She Was Unsuccessful in Landing a Film Role Till 1976

Just like many actors, Meryl Streep had many unsuccessful auditions. One such unsuccessful audition was for the remake of the “King Kong” movie in 1976. Unkind comments about her appearance were made at the audition, which she did not take to heart. A year later, she landed her first film role in the 1977 movie “Julia” which starred Jane Fonda. Streep won the Golden Globe Award and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress two years later, in 1979.

She’s Been Nominated for 5 Grammy Awards

Streep has been nominated for numerous Academy Awards, including five Grammy nominations. With acting as her primary career, it is surprising that the actress has had five remarkable nominations for a Grammy Award. These include “Mamma Mia” and her reading of “Charlotte’s Web” in 2020.

She Established Two Scholarships

The actress established two scholarships at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2014 to help fund students. She named one of the scholarships after her former roommate, calling it the Joan Hertzberg Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship is specifically for students who are math majors. The other scholarship is called the Meryl Streep Endowed Scholarship for English majors.
