Musical instruments come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common- they all produce beautiful musical notes that soothe the ear.

Sadly, some musical instruments have not been able to withstand the test of time. For whatever reason, very few people play some instruments, or some remain stashed away in a part of the house, leading to owners forgetting their existence.

Some of these instruments are worth a small fortune to collectors. You may be sitting on a small fortune if you have some musical instruments lying around and forgotten in the house. These are five musical instruments that are worth a lot of money now:

Viola da Gamba

The Viola da Gamba is an instrument mainly used during the Renaissance period in Spain and Morocco. It is a rare instrument that is not the same as the standard viola instrument. This musical instrument will surely fetch you good fortune if you have one in good condition. In October 2009, a Viola da Gamba was sold for a whopping $215,000 at an auction. Although many people may need to learn about this instrument or have forgotten its existence, several artists still use it in their music. A 1997 CD featuring various artists, including Elvis Costello, was the most notable.

Violin—Stradivari

Violins are far from forgotten by many as they are one of the most common stringed instruments people can name. However, very few people may know about the Stradivari violin, a violin made by Antonio Stradivari, one of the finest violin makers in the world. This violin has been owned by some of the best violin players in the world and was auctioned off in 2006 for a price of over $3.5 million. Only one of its kind, the Stradivari violin dates back to 1707 and is one of the most valuable violins in the world.

Vintage Guitars

People often have vintage or antique-looking guitars lying around in the unused house and gathering dust. Some of these guitars are worth money and can cost up to $400,000. Some models, like the Space Age chic 1958-59 Gibson Explorer or the 1936-42 Martin D-45, or valued at very high prices. A guitar you have stored away somewhere may be worth money.

Violoncello—Gennaro Gagliano

The violoncello is an instrument made by the great Gennaro Gagliano. The instrument was estimated to have been made in Naples in 1765, and today it is a musical instrument worth a small fortune. The violoncello was auctioned and sold at over $363,000 in 2009, even though it was roughly worth $300,000. Many people do not know this musical instrument. However, being only one of its kind, it is scarce to come by and is worth a good fortune.

Vintage Pianos

Pianos can also help to fetch you a small fortune. Based on the make, model, condition, and age of the piano, they can help you earn up to $70,000. If a vintage piano is rare enough, it can even be worth more than that. Some people have pianos tucked away in storage, and if you are of these people, you may miss out on a chance to make a small fortune. You can have your piano valued by collectors or pawn shop owners and sell it for a reasonable amount.
