Act Now or Regret Later: 10 Countries On The Brink Due to Melting Glaciers – Are You Living in One of Them?

As the planet grapples with the impacts of global warming, melting glaciers represent a significant threat to many nations. This article examines the top 10 countries most vulnerable to the consequences of glacial melt. These 10 countries face imminent dangers such as rising sea levels, flash floods, and water scarcity:

Haiti

Climate change is terrifying in Haiti. This island country is located in the Atlantic Hurricane Basin, which makes it a vulnerable area where hurricanes can be experienced frequently. Climate change and melting glaciers can lead to higher evaporation in the atmosphere leading to higher frequency and intensity of hurricanes. Moreover, Haiti is a country whose population’s main occupation is agriculture, and due to rising sea levels, saltwater can enter farmlands and destroy vegetation and crops. Plus, the rainfall decline due to climate change adds to the worry of Haitians.

Malawi was the epicenter of Cyclone Idai in 2019, which was said to be the costliest and deadliest tropical cyclone, it was a result of weather impact and climate change, which led to massive destruction which still affects its citizens, and they haven’t revived entirely yet. Furthermore, due to shifting precipitation patterns, rainfall is projected to become more unpredictable and concentrated, potentially causing flooding and additional agricultural damage. Overall, climate change is anticipated to limit food availability and have severe consequences for human well-being, impeding development progress in many sectors of the country.

Cyclone Idai disastrously affected Mozambique, and since then, the country has experienced several tropical storms and cyclones, making people’s lives miserable. With global warming at its peak, the effect of climate change will be even worse for Mozambique. Extreme weather events such as cyclones, floods, and drought have become more common and violent in recent years as weather patterns have changed, making the lives of the residents harder.

Kiribati

Rising sea levels threaten to completely wipe out Kiribati from the world’s map absolutely in the coming years. While Kiribati, like many other nations, is preparing for the effects of climate change, the island is barely six feet above sea level and is surrounded by atolls and reef islands, making rising water levels a threat to the nation’s existence. Rising sea levels are anticipated to contaminate and destroy the island’s waters and soil. The island’s essential fishing economy is also more susceptible as climate change causes ocean shifts such as coral bleaching, reef structure destruction, heat waves in the sea, and other factors that compel marine life to migrate.

Bangladesh

Coastal populations and island countries are among those facing the most significant risks from the climate problem as sea levels rise. For decades, Bangladesh has been battling the effects of climate change. Increasing sea levels are expected to cause the country to lose around 10% of its territory by 2050. This could result in approx. 14% of Bangladeshis are experiencing displacement from their homes. Furthermore, repeated floods and rainfall increases can harm agricultural produce and the livelihoods of communities in general.

Pakistan

With less forest cover, Pakistan experiences a temperature rise every year. It is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. The situation is expected to worsen in the coming decades as most of the glaciers in the Himalayas, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush mountain ranges have melted, which has led to a consecutive series of floods and droughts, leading to water scarcity in the region. All of this, along with high political tensions and inadequate measures to combat the effects of climate change, will contribute towards Pakistan becoming more prone to risk from global warming and can lead to a questionable survival of its citizens.

Philippines

The Philippines has historically been prone to severe weather. However, the country has suffered dramatically in recent years, with about twenty tropical storms hitting Philippine waters yearly, with as many as eight having drastic landfall. Because of climate change, tropical cyclones have become more frequent and intense in the region during the last decade. Furthermore, two elements specific to the Philippines, topography and development, have conspired to intensify both the threat and its disastrous repercussions. The Philippines is situated in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, encircled by naturally warm seas that are expected to get much warmer as temperatures rise. Natural causes like local wind patterns or currents can also exacerbate tropical storms.

Afghanistan

The temperatures have continuously increased in Afghanistan, and rains have supposedly decreased by around 40%. Moreover, glacier melting in the Hindu Kush mountain range has led to warming conditions. These two phenomena have jointly contributed to both rainfall-induced drought and snowmelt-induced drought. Flooding has also occurred in other locations (including some of the same areas hit by the drought) as a result of both severe spring rains and floods in rivers caused by rising snowmelt. The metropolis of Kabul and its surrounding districts, which provide the majority of the nation’s agricultural yields, have been particularly heavily hit by flooding and drought, raising the risk of hunger and resource scarcity.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is one of the countries most affected by climate change till now, and the one that is expected to continue being affected till 2080. As it sits on the Atlantic Hurricane Basin, Zimbabwe’s location makes it vulnerable to severe hurricanes and tropical storms that hinder people’s regular lives. Rising weather extremes have exacerbated the country’s poverty and hunger levels. While Idai’s floodwaters devastated many crops, erratic rainfalls and droughts pose more considerable hazards to the country’s agricultural industry, which employs approximately eighty percent of the working population. Zimbabwe’s position is critical as climate change can potentially destroy the economy and topography of Zimbabwe.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo)

Temperature increases, severe weather, and changes in total precipitation and rainfall variability are expected to worsen the challenges posed by climate change in DR Congo, mainly because agriculture, the majority of which is based on rainfall, is the driving force of DR Congo’s economy and the primary source of a living for most, and that would get majorly affected by extreme weather conditions leading to distressful conditions for the Congolese.
