Still Clicking Carelessly? 11 Online Shopping Mistakes You’ll Regret Not Avoiding

We all like to shop online, and we may have fallen into some scam where we don’t receive products we ordered, receive the wrong products, or even more severe scams like having our personal information stolen. To ensure a safe shopping experience, we must take as many precautions as possible, and these eleven will surely help you securely shop online. These are 11 precautions that every online shopper must take when shopping online:

Search the Internet Safely

Although this may sound like an obvious precaution when shopping online, it is one of the most important and must be mentioned here. Many pop-ups and links appear on our screens related to what we’re shopping for, whether coupons or discount links. Often, these pop-ups and links may be malware that could lead to malicious websites and content that could corrupt your system or release personal information.

Use a Secure Connection

When shopping online, it is best not to use public Wi-Fi. The safer and more secure option is to use private Wi-Fi connections or personal mobile data while shopping online. Entering account information and passwords using public connections could lead to hackers on the same network using it to get access to all your account details and passwords. When shopping online, you’ll be required to enter some essential details, which hackers could use to use this information for any fraudulent or illegal activity potentially.

Shop on Secure Sites

In addition to using a secure connection, you must also remember to shop only on secure shopping websites. One of the best ways to ensure you shop on a secure website is by looking for the “s” after “hppt,” usually found at the URL’s start. These secure sites offer protection for the information you enter while shopping. Online shopping sites that are not secure could lead to cybercrimes, including stealing your information, money, or any other kind of fraud. Sometimes, illegal sites are even designed to look like the actual shopping sites you want to go to.

Use a Credit Card

When shopping online, a precaution that you can take to prevent any theft is to use a credit card for payments rather than a debit card. Debit cards are directly linked to your bank account and can, therefore, be more at risk of cybercrimes. You can even get a temporary credit card from your bank to prevent scammers from getting access or stealing your credit card number to make fraudulent purchases. Credit cards are the safer option when shopping online because credit card companies often may reverse charges and conduct proper investigations when they see any fraudulent activity.

Protect Your Passwords

One of the best precautions to take when online shopping is to ensure that you have strong passwords that are different for different shopping sites. Keeping track of different site passwords may take a lot of work. You can, therefore, manage your passwords using a password manager or even by writing them down somewhere and storing them safely. A secure password will include a combination of letters, numbers, and characters and be personal to you. If you have a secure password, you’re online shopping experience will also be more secure.

Use a VPN

You can install a virtual private network or VPN if you cannot use a personal internet connection while shopping online. VPNs help to encrypt data in a way that will prevent hackers or scammers from accessing your personal information. There are many good VPNs available that you can use to create an encrypted connection where it is secure to enter personal details online without the risk of getting hacked. VPNs are the best way to protect your information when shopping online using any public network or Wi-Fi connection.

Only Provide Necessary Information

Online shopping websites often require you to sign up to the website if you want to personalize your shopping experience. When creating an account on a shopping website, restrict the information you give out only to the information marked as necessary on the website. If the website has fields asking for all kinds of personal details, you can skip the ones that are not required. Only giving out the required information can ensure less information is at risk to scammers and hackers.

Password Protect All Your Devices

A necessary precaution to take when shopping online is to ensure that all the devices you shop from are password protected. This can help prevent anyone from physically entering your device and stealing your information. It is also essential that you don’t save the passwords to the website on the devices you use and to ensure that you are logged off or have your device locked before walking away from it.

Have a Dedicated Shopping Email

Most online shopping sites send emails to the registered email address to inform customers of different sales, coupons, new releases, etc. Having a single email address for all online shopping sites can ensure that all the spam messages from shopping sites are sent to a single email address. This helps lower the risks of opening potentially malicious emails from scam accounts.

Look Out for Scams

In addition to links and pop-ups that may be scams, the emails you receive could also be scams to steal your information disguised as advertisements for a shopping site. Searching for products online often leads to websites that look legitimate but are not. You must remember to go through product descriptions and properly scrutinize product photos to ensure a product’s or website’s authenticity. Don’t open emails from unknown senders or sites, and shop on sites that are popularly known to be more reliable.

Don’t Fall for Offers That Are Too-good-to-be-true

Many shopping websites have different deals and offers that entice customers to increase their shopping. However, be alert about the offers and deals you see on products sold on unpopular websites. If the deal is too good to be true, you may be scammed if you purchase the item. You could receive a product that is not the same as the product photo, or you could have your information stolen, especially if it is from an unknown website.
