Almost a billion people worldwide are living with some sort of disability. Together, they make up around 15% of the worldwide population. Disability is a challenging and exposes society’s injustice.

Disability in any form refers to life-long mental, sensory, physical, and intellectual impairment, which no one chooses. The barriers society imposes on people with disabilities make them lose their equal share of living life to the fullest.

They face injustice in almost every situation in their life. Social participation, employment, education, and transportation are only a few.

Let’s explore the number of injustices that people with disabilities face almost every day that nobody usually talks about.

Inaccessible Public Spaces

Many perfectly fine people face challenges while moving in a public space with so many people out there. The situation worsens for people with any form of physical or visible disability.

Many of them even have to use crutches or wheelchairs to move around, making it hard for them to make their way out themselves.

Almost all the available public spaces lack the basic needs and accommodations that a person with a disability might need while moving in a public space. This is nothing but a pure form of injustice to disabled people, as they deserve an equal share of services available publicly.

Therefore, public places like recreational facilities, government buildings, and transportation must upgrade their system according to the requirements.

Educational Barriers

Education is one of the most basic and significant rights of every human being. It becomes challenging for students with disabilities.

The disabilities can be of several types: cognitive, invisible, physical, mental, and intellectual. Almost every other organization has an inadequate educational structure for the education of children with disabilities.

This inadequate educational structure increases the suffering of disabled children due to the rigid, inaccessible, and unaccommodating framework almost every educational institution uses to frame its curriculum.

Challenges that students with disabilities face at their educational institutions include insufficient funding, inaccessible conditions, lack of individualization, troubled communication with teachers, and lack of specialists.

Healthcare Inequalities

Individuals with limited financial resources and disabilities face very challenging circumstances. In addition, patients with intellectual disabilities are often maltreated by health workers, making the situation worse for them.

The form of inadequate health services that disabled people get also includes prolonged waiting times and contemptuous behavior or dealing from healthcare providers. They often fail to understand their needs properly.

Healthcare organizations must spread awareness of the issue and make all possible arrangements to make healthcare facilities accessible to disabled people. They may take a little support from several running NGOs for the donations.

Limited Employment Opportunities

There are fewer or almost no job opportunities for people with disabilities. Many don’t want to seek a job due to the discrimination faced at almost every other organization. Very few people understand the needs of the disabled.

Lack of enough formal education is also a barrier for people with disabilities in the job market. The government should work on the issue and introduce some significant schemes with guaranteed jobs for disabled candidates.

Social Isolation

Social isolation is one of the major factors of depression and anxiety in people with disabilities. Factors contributing to being socially isolated may include a lack of inclusive recreational activities, transportation issues, and inaccessible social events or public places.

All of these individual challenges make one fall into social isolation altogether. Lack of communication makes a physically challenged person feel ignored and unimportant to discuss something significant.

Harassment and Bully

Bullying and harassment are the two main factors that shatter someone’s confidence and personality, and unfortunately, people with disabilities suffer the most bullying and harassment.

These micro-aggressions, bullying, and harassment often deteriorate the mental health and emotional well-being of people with disabilities. Some of us find peace and satisfaction in bullying someone underprivileged or weak.

They find hurting someone’s self-esteem and keeping their morale down some sort of fun or joke. People with disabilities often report depression, anxiety, and lack of sleep due to ongoing harassment, abuse, and bullying.

Attitudinal Barriers

Attitudinal barriers are the barriers that contribute to several other barriers. Some examples of attitudinal barriers include discrimination, prejudice, stigma, and stereotyping.

People occasionally form stereotypes about individuals with disabilities, assuming that their overall well-being is compromised or their health is negatively impacted due to their impairments.

Considering society, people may project these attitudes by expressing their ideas regarding disability. They may see someone’s disability as an accident, a tragedy, something that can be cured, and a punishment.

We all need to stop taking disability as a shortcoming or personal deficit band support everyone living full and independent lives.

Communication Challenges

People with such disabilities that have affected their reading, speaking, writing, hearing, and understanding are more likely to face communication challenges.

Some of such common communication challenges involve health promotion cautions in written form that pose difficulties for individuals with vision impairments in accessing information. People with hearing impairments often face difficulties with audible announcements like oral communication without sign language or visual messages without captions. It indicates the need to design and operate every working body so that everyone can easily understand.

Transportation Barriers

Transportation barriers bring numerous challenges for people with disabilities, making it difficult to move independently.

Almost all publicly available transportation systems lack basic accessibility features, such as designated seat areas, elevators, and ramps, obstructing people with mobility impairments or those using wheelchairs to avail of these public services.

People with hearing or visual disabilities also face difficulties due to the lack of visual displays and audio announcements in the moving vehicle. It results in mobility restriction, dependency, inaccessibility to employment, and limited social participation.

We must address these transportation and other barriers to ensure equitable access to basic and significant services, promoting inclusivity for everyone.

Institutionalization

Institutionalization is a deeply concerning issue that several people with disabilities encounter. Institutionalization places disabled individuals in residential facilities or institutions instead of supporting and encouraging them to continue living within their societies or communities.

It may result in expected social isolation, lack of autonomy, and lack of freedom. The systems in these institutions often overlook their residents’ basic needs, which may lead to inadequate care, abuse, and neglect.

It also projects the segregation people with disabilities face from society. We must introduce a more inclusive approach, promoting community-based living and essential support services. Financial Hardships

Financial hardships are a harsh reality for many disabled people living in our society. Disability comes with additional costs, including specialized care providers, assertive devices, and medical expenses.

These additional expenses often burden the family and the individual himself. Job opportunities are often limited, resulting in economic instability and less or no income. These financial challenges affect disabled individuals and increase their inaccessibility to social activities, healthcare, and education.

Difficulty Accessing Digital Content

Inaccessible digital content remains a prevalent challenge for people with disabilities, even in the digital age. Many online platforms, apps, and websites are usually not designed with the required accessibility features to help individuals with any form of disability.

It prevents such individuals from having equal access to online opportunities, services, and information. For instance, people with visual disabilities may encounter websites that do not have screen reading or alternative text for images, making them unable to scroll and access content available online.

Individuals with hearing impairments may face difficulties encountering uncaptioned or without-transcript videos. It leads to digital division, social inclusion, and educational and employment prospects.

Lack of Representation

The lack of representation is a concern for individuals with disabilities in various elements of society. It could be in politics, media, and decision-making processes, as people with impairments are usually underrepresented or absent.

It promotes the idea that the voices and experiences of people with disabilities are unimportant or irrelevant. As a result, their input needs to better shape public perceptions, narratives, and policies, is missing.

Being represented is about visibility and the surety that unique challenges or perspectives of disabled people matter and can be integrated, promoting an equitable society for everyone.

Housing Discrimination

Housing discrimination is one of the most distressing realities for individuals with disabilities, despite legal protections in many countries.

Individuals with impairments often face several forms of prejudice while seeking housing, such as the landlord’s refusal to make accommodations for necessary accessibility. They also usually charge higher rents for installing accessible units.

In addition, some real estate owners may show discriminatory behavior by keeping individuals with disabilities away from certain high-end housing complexes or neighborhoods. These injustices limit housing options, leading to many individuals’ isolated living conditions.

Inadequate Support Services

Inadequate support services are a significant issue for disabled individuals. They need different assistance, like mental health services, sign language interpreters, and personal care attendants, to live life.

However, it is challenging for them to access or avail of these essential services due to insufficient funding, long waitlists, and limited availability. It may result in reduced or delayed access to crucial support, impacting their lives.

In short, society is in dire need of significant changes that we need to make in order to ease living conditions for individuals with disabilities. They are not carrying their disabilities as they choose; it is gifted to them, and we never know who will be the next to suffer.

To address these injustices, society must invest and prioritize the availability of assertive devices, support services, and access to public places and healthcare. This will help them live a fulfilling life.
