Got Hidden Treasures? These 12 Lost Artifacts Are Now a Museum’s Most-Wanted

All the artifacts in this list talk of lost treasure or have significant symbolic meaning to their owners or the countries they originated from. Some artifacts are a mystery as researchers determine what is true and false. The artifacts, if ever found, would be an immense discovery as a part of history will be solved and will be great displays in a museum for historians, archaeologists, and regular people to look at and learn from. These 12 forgotten artifacts are some that museums would kill for to have them for their own:

The Tomb of Genghis Khan

According to history, the great Genghis Khan died in the summer of 1227. It is claimed that Genghis Khan had declared that he wished to be buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in the Burkhan Khaldun Mountains in Mongolia. Today, it is believed that his remains are somewhere in the heart of the Burkhan Khaldun Mountains, without any mausoleum, temple, or tombstone to mark the burial site, which remains to be lost till today.

Sarcophagus of Menkaure

Menkaure was a pharaoh in the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt during the Old Kingdom. A pyramid was constructed at Giza for this pharaoh and is the smallest of the three Great Pyramids in Egypt. In the 1830s, an English military officer named Howard Vyse explored the pyramids, making several discoveries. One of these discoveries is the ornate sarcophagus found in Menkaure’s pyramid. The sarcophagus was set to be transported to England by ship in 1838. However, the ship sank and took everything down to the bottom of the ocean. The ship with this great treasure remains lost somewhere in the ocean.

The Knights Templar Treasure

The Knights Templar was a religious, military order founded in Europe in 1119. This military order aimed to support and protect Jerusalem against Muslim neighbors and the Christian pilgrims who visit Holy Places. As time passed, the order gained enormous wealth and power. They were later arrested in 1307, and their treasury was smashed and destroyed. However, the treasury was found empty, and the treasure remains hidden even today.

The Library of the Moscow Tsars

The Library of the Moscow Tsars, also known as the Library of Ivan the Terrible, is believed to have contained an expansive collection of ancient and legendary books. The library disappeared after the death of Ivan the Terrible. Many historians and archaeologists are challenged by the history of this library because, till today, there has yet to be convincing evidence of the existence of this great library. The library is said to contain over 800 books with unique Greek and Roman literature that was inherited by Ivan the Terrible from his grandmother.

Honjo Masamune Sword

The Hanjo Masamune Sword is a sword created by one of the most excellent sword makers in Japanese history, called Goro Nyudo Masamune. The sword was named after one of its owners, who took it after a battle in the 16th century. Later, the sword came into the possession of the first shogun, or emperor of Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu. As time passed, the sword was passed down to different generations in the Tokugawa family until the Second World War. After this war, the sword was believed to have been handed over to American soldiers who may have destroyed it or brought it to the US.

Crown Jewels of Ireland

The Crown Jewels of Ireland were said to be comprised of a jeweled star, a diamond brooch, and five gold coins that were the property of the Crown. These jewels were kept in a library in the Dublin Castle. The jewels were stolen in 1907 from the castle, made possible because of the lax security placed for the protection of the jewels. The theft remains a mystery because there is no evidence of who stole the jewels. Speculations were made about possible suspects. However, there was no proof. 

Lost Inca Gold

The Inca Empire was expansive in South America. When the Europeans invaded their territories, the people fled and took some of their treasure with them. According to legend, the Incas who fled for safety hid their treasure in the lost city called Paititi. The location of this city is unknown, and multiple legends and stories surround this mysterious city. Researchers speculate that the city is located somewhere in the jungles of Peru. However, not much evidence has been found, leading to questions of whether the city exists or is the same city as the legendary El Dorado.

Dead Sea Copper Scroll Treasures

The Dead Sea Scrolls were first discovered in an archaeological site called Qumran at the northern end of the Dead Sea near the town of Kalya, in 1946. Further excavations were made at the site, and more texts of parchment, papyrus, and copper scrolls were discovered. One of the copper scrolls provides the details of 64 locations where large amounts of gold and silver were supposedly hidden. However, the locations mentioned on the scroll are not recognizable to anyone, and there are no precise instructions or directions to where these locations are, leaving the location of this treasure a mystery.

Sappho’s Lost Poems

Sappho was a Greek lyric poet who lived in the 7th Century BC. She was considered the Shakespeare of her time and was highly regarded for her work by ancient Greeks. She was one of the finest poems to have lived, but unfortunately, only a few have survived. However, in 2014, the University of Oxford released never-before-seen sections of two of Sappho’s poems. One of the poems talks about the great poet’s brothers, while the other talks about unrequited love.

Romanov Easter Eggs

The royal tradition of decorative Easter eggs began with Tsar Alexander III. The Tsar ordered a decorative Easter egg to present to his wife as a gift from renowned Russian jeweler Peter Carl Faberge. The egg was made of gold, and inside, it contained multiple surprises made of gold, diamonds, and rubies. The Tsar went on to have Faberge make one of these Easter eggs each year until his death. The tradition led to a collection of 44 eggs for his wife and several others for Russian families. Eight royal Easter eggs are believed to have gone missing, leaving a mystery for historians.

Lost Raphael Painting

Raphael Sanzio, or simply Raphael, was an Italian painter who lived from 1483 to 1520. This great painter painted a striking work of art called the “Portrait of a Young Man.” No information about the person’s identity or when the painting was made is known. A Museum in Krakow, Poland, owned the painting. When the Germans invaded the country, Nazi officials stole the painting to hang it up in a gallery in Austria. However, this gallery was never built. The painting was last seen to be kept by Hans Frank, a Nazi official. After the war, Frank was sentenced to death, and the painting was never found.

Royal Casket

Yet another artifact stolen from Poland by the Nazis and has since been lost is the Royal Casket of Poland’s Princess Izabela Czartoryska. The casket was created in 1800 using a collection of artifacts from Polish royal families who have ruled the country for many years. The artifacts include jewels worn by multiple kings of Poland and other works of art and mementos that belonged to royal families. When the German Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, the casket was stolen, and its contents have since been lost.
