The illustrious “richest vessel ever lost at sea,” often dubbed the Holy Grail of shipwrecks, is a grand 16th-century Portuguese ship, the Flor de la Mar. A maritime masterpiece, it navigated the vast Indian Ocean, embodying its era’s zenith of seafaring technology. With its seaworthiness dwindling, a historic twist emerged when the ship was requisitioned in 1511 to aid the Portuguese conquest of Malacca, present-day Malaysia. Following the victorious campaign, on its voyage back, the ailing vessel succumbed to a storm’s fury off Sumatra’s shores. Laden with riches, estimated at a staggering $2 billion by today’s standards, meant for the Portuguese monarch, the Flor de la Mar, vanished beneath the waves.
The Merchant Royal
Dubbed the ‘El Dorado of the Seas,’ the Merchant Royal, a formidable 700-ton English galleon of the early 17th century, sailed under Captain John Limbrey. Homeward bound from trading with New World colonies, the ship sought refuge for vital repairs in Cadiz, Spain. Amidst the restoration, Limbrey seized a lucrative chance, partnering with Spanish authorities to ferry treasure for paying 30,000 troops stationed in Antwerp, Belgium. The ship carried ‘100,000 pounds in gold and as much value in jewels’. Today that would be worth a few hundred million pounds at least. The Merchant Royal sprung a leak along the journey and sank off the Cornish coast on September 23, 1641.
The Treasure Fleet of Lima
The Treasure Fleet of Lima was a fleet of Spanish ships carrying gold, silver, and other artifacts from Peru to Spain. It was attacked by British pirates in 1820 and sank off the coast of Chile. The treasure is estimated to be worth billions of dollars and has yet to be found. The fleet was made up of 12 ships carrying a cargo of over 2 million pesos in gold and silver. The attack took place on February 20, 1820, and the British pirates were led by Lord Cochrane. The Spanish ships were outnumbered and outgunned, and they were quickly defeated.
The RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner sunk by a German U-boat in 1915. It was carrying a cargo of gold, silver, and other artifacts, and the sinking caused great public outrage. The Lusitania was one of the largest ships in the world at the time, and it was considered unsinkable. However, a torpedo from the U-20 struck it, and it sank in just 18 minutes. The Lusitania’s wreck was discovered in 1982 and has been the subject of much research and speculation. Some people believe that the wreck still carries a significant amount of treasure, but others believe the treasure has already been looted.
1715 Treasure Fleet
In the summer of 1715, a fleet of eleven Spanish ships laden with precious treasures from the Americas embarked on a voyage from Havana, Cuba, homeward-bound. Tragically, their journey was cut short by a ferocious hurricane off Florida’s coast, resulting in the sinking of all eleven vessels and the loss of over 1,000 lives. In the aftermath, other ships, including pirate-operated vessels, swooped in to salvage the amassed riches from the wreckage. Legends persist of treasure occasionally washing ashore on Florida’s beaches, an ongoing reminder of the maritime saga and the allure of hidden riches concealed beneath the ocean’s surface.
The SS Gairsoppa was a British cargo ship that sank in 1941 in the Indian Ocean. It was carrying a cargo of silver, which is still believed to be on board. The ship was en route from Bombay to Liverpool when a German U-boat torpedoed it. The Gairsoppa was one of the largest ships sunk during World War II. It was carrying over 200,000 bars of silver, worth an estimated $1.3 billion today.
The RMS Republic, a steam-powered ocean liner constructed in Belfast in 1903, was a prized possession of the White Star Line. In 1909, off Nantucket, Massachusetts, the vessel met a tragic fate in a collision during dense fog. Although six lives were lost, approximately 1,500 souls were rescued before the ship’s descent. Nicknamed the ‘Millionaires Ship’ due to its affluent passenger list, the RMS Republic purportedly held American gold coins valued at $250,000 when it sank. Amidst speculation, whispers circulate that it concealed an astonishing $3 million in additional coins. Should this treasure trove endure, its value could exceed $1 billion.
The Portuguese oceanic vessel, Cinco Chagas, met its demise in the Battle of Faial Island during the 1594 Anglo-Spanish War. Nestled among the Azores archipelago, Faial Island rests within the Atlantic Ocean under Portuguese jurisdiction. Whispers of the Cinco Chagas’ sinking carried a tantalizing secret—rumors pointed to a staggering treasure haul of 2,000 tons, encompassing 22 chests laden with an abundant array of diamonds, rubies, and pearls. This cache, an actual fortune in a modern context, potentially eclipses a billion-dollar valuation.

In a world that values innovation, creativity, and expertise, the dress code has taken a back seat to skills that drive tangible results. From the tech industry to creative fields and consulting roles, these professions prove that you can trade the suit for more loot and still command top-dollar salaries. Of course, fewer direct interactions with clients and greater use of online conference calls have aided the process. So, if you’re aiming to earn big without being tied to a formal wardrobe, these career paths offer a refreshing and lucrative alternative.
