Every generation has a bundle of memories and specific things that belong to that generation. No one can relate to it as much as people who experienced those memories. Gen X is the term used for people born between 1965-1981. While these people are in their 40s-60s today, there are certain things that Gen-Xers could boast of that we, as Millennials or Gen-Z, will lose forever once these people exit the stage:

Vinyl Records

With a single click, we enjoy effortless music listening and a vast global selection. Contrast this with the past when enjoying a song required a large disc, akin to a record, capable of playing only a handful of cherished tunes. Having limited choices, Gen Xers deeply appreciated each selection on their vinyl records—the ongoing debate questions whether vinyl records’ superior sound quality and precision still hold.

Cameras with Negative Film

With unlimited storage in our smartphones, we can click thousands of photos and store them for an infinite period. But for Gen Xers, cameras meant a roll of negative film, which was limited, and these negatives had to be developed to be made into a photograph. No digital prints or Polaroid cameras with instant pictures. These cameras were the real deal, and that excitement of waiting for the images to be developed made the Gen Xers value their memories even better.

VCRs

Not liking a web series on one streaming platform? No problem. We’ll switch to another. With all content on our phones, we sometimes find it challenging to decide what to watch. Well, that wasn’t the case back in the 1970s. In those times, a popular video cassette recorder (VCR) was used to record movies or television shows, and then these VCRs were rented where families would watch shows together.

Yellow Pages

Hey Google, find a guitar teacher near me! – Such an easy command, and Google gives all guitar teachers the numbers nearby within seconds. We can choose to contact any one of them. It would not be wrong to say that for Gen Xers, Yellow Pages was the “Google” of that time. It included all the essential contact information, such as contacts of nannies, electricians, life coaches, etc.; one could contact them after browsing the Yellow Pages.

Hardcover Dictionaries

While we have e-dictionaries, Gen Xers had the hardcover dictionary to reference words. Maybe, that’s why some of them have such good vocabulary. Moreover, the dictionaries came even in translated versions which would also help the individual learn the nuances of a new language.

Typewriter

Early Gen Xers, those around 1965-1975, were the last to experience a typewriter’s whims and fancies. Necessary documentation in those days was reliant on the typewriter. Its clacking sound might get annoying for today’s generation, but it used to be like a tune for the ones working on it back then.

Video Arcades

We are in the generation of games like PUBG and Call of Duty that can be played on our phones 24/7, but Gen Xers had the fun of waiting in long queues to enjoy one game of PacMan. Video arcades were the most happening thing about people’s childhood during the 1970s.

Parachute Pants

What we call boyfriend jeans nowadays was the regular dress code of the OG Gen-Xers. These parachute pants blended cotton and nylon and were super-breezy and comfortable. Well, it is back in trend, as people are moving towards comfortable fashion, but the real owners of these pants were the 1970s-1980s kids.

Cheap Concert Tickets

Nowadays, attending concerts has become a costly affair but back in the mid-80s. But Gen Xers had the advantage of attending shows of their favourite band or musician with ticket prices as cheap as $10-$20.

Cassettes

Cassettes were the most remarkable thing for people of the 1970s-1980s, and the fun part was rewinding the tapes into the cassettes. Every mid-70s kid was a pro at it. Moreover, nowadays, we have access to the world of global music, but during that time, one had to choose among the cassettes of many musicians. Then they would cherish that one cassette by listening to it continuously, and that joy was paramount.

Radio Box

While television came into the picture, many stores still only had radio boxes where they could hear about the crucial events happening around the globe. In today’s world, it is a forgotten mode of communication, but at that time, it was one of the most important modes through which information spread like fire!

Walkman

Portable audio players were a thing that people showed off proudly back then. The most exciting part about these portable players was that everyone had a playlist of their own, and there used to be a war of playlists between the ones who owned a Walkman – well, mostly everyone did!

Dial Phones

Dial phones were used last by the Gen Xers as these were the first generation even to use mobile phones. Unlike today, where every person has their contacts on their mobile and can talk to anybody whenever they want to, in the mid-70s, talking to a friend was exciting because the calls were timed and only limited calls could be made. Also, remembering numbers like a pro was a vibe then!

Latchkey Kids

Gen-X was also known as Latchkey Generation, as most kids used to be alone for a longer time as their parents went off to work. The term latchkey came from the idea that the house’s keys were put in a thread that was worn as a neckpiece by the kids so that they do not lose the keys.

Styling and Accessories

While numerous hairstyles and accessories are available nowadays for people and styling offers diverse options, Gen-Xers were the gurus when it comes to styling – this generation were the flag-bearers of cool styling – be it spiked hair, metal hair, neon clothes, bangs, colored eye-liners – you name it, and they’vee experienced it!
