In 1996, Atlanta hosted the Summer Olympics. Organizers declared Atlanta the safest place on earth for the next two months. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen, and security officer Richard Jewell found a pipe bomb and immediately called the police to ensure safety.
Jewells’ died from the blast, and over 100 people were injured. The F.B.I. probe took months to reach its conclusion. The bomber, Eric Rudolph, was eventually apprehended in 2013.
Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur’s Murders

Two iconic hip-hop musicians were killed within six months in the late 1990s. Six days after being shot in 1996, Tupac Shakur passed away. On March 9, 1997, Biggie Smalls (also known as Notorious B.I.G.), a suspect in Tupac’s slaying, was also shot and killed.
The two were friends before the East Coast vs. West Coast battle escalated into hostility. Former Death Row Records C.E.O. Suge Knight and dishonest LAPD officers were among the crime suspects.
Bombing of the World Trade Center

The World Trade Center was bombed eight years before September 11, 2001. Six persons were killed, and over a thousand were injured when a rental van containing a bomb exploded on the afternoon of February 26, 1993.
Mohammed Salameh and his three companions were apprehended and found guilty of the bombing.
Jeffrey Dahmer’s Crimes

Between 1978 and 1991, Dahmer killed 17 young men and did awful things to their corpses. On July 22, 1991, the murderer was finally apprehended after the intended victim managed to flee and call the police.
His background received much media attention to show why someone would commit such heinous atrocities. The new Ryan Murphy Netflix original series, which starred Evan Peters and was based on the life of Jeffrey Dahmer, showed the perspectives of Dahmer’s victims.
Shooting of Pablo Escobar

According to the Wall Street Journal, Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel was in charge of 80% of the cocaine supplied to the U.S., which resulted in thousands of fatalities. He was made a target for the U.S. and Colombian authorities, so he fled.
On December 2, 1993, Escobar tried to flee the law by sprinting across Medellin rooftops, but he was shot and killed in the struggle. His passing put an end to the dominance of cocaine in the nation.
Murder of Selena Quintanilla

American Singer Selena Quintanilla, the Queen of Tejano, was murdered at 23. Yolanda Saldavar, her fan club head, orchestrated a hit after she was caught stealing from the singer.
Yolanda wanted the blame for the murder to shift focus elsewhere to avoid repercussions of her misdeeds. Selena’s untimely passing startled many. Saldavar was sentenced to life in prison in 1995 with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
Princess Dianas Death

Three persons were killed and one was injured in an automobile accident in Paris, France, on August 31, 1997. Princess Diana of Wales was among them. Diana’s car was followed by Paparazzi at high speed when their driver lost control and crashed.
The world was shocked after her untimely demise, and more than 2 billion people watched Princess Diana’s burial. During her funeral, mourners lined the streets in front of Westminster Abbey.
Oklahoma Blast

On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh rented a Ryder truck with agricultural fertilizer, diesel fuel, and other chemicals inside it. He parked the truck before the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and walked to a getaway car.
When the bomb went off, it destroyed the building and killed 168 people. He was an Iraq war veteran and was eventually sentenced to death for his crime.
JonBenéts Mysterious Death

On December 26, 1996, Patsy Ramsey called the police to report that her daughter JonBenét, a child beauty queen, was missing and that a kidnapper had left a three-page ransom note on the stairway with a $118,000 demand.
Later that day, JonBenét’s body was discovered in the basement of the Ramsey house following a thorough search. No one has been put on trial as of yet for JonBenét’s passing.
Massacre at Columbine High School

On April 20, 1999, two heavily armed youths killed 12 classmates, one teacher, and themselves while injuring nearly 20 others in the Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

Mystery of Andrew Cunanan

Gianni Versace, the legendary fashion designer, was murdered by a serial killer, Andrew Cunnan, on July 15, 1997, at his Miami residence. Cunanan was already on the F.B.I.’s Most Wanted List before the murder after going on a murder rampage in which he killed four men: William Reese, Lee Miglin, David Madson, and Jeffrey Trail.
Cunanan killed himself with the same gun he had used to kill three victims as police closed in on him. What his intentions were remains a mystery to this day.
Phil Hartman Was Murdered By His Wife

Phil Hartman became well-known throughout his eight seasons on “Saturday Night Live” as a cast member. But the comedian’s untimely passing might be what makes him most well-known.
Hartman was shot by his wife, Brynn, on May 28, 1999, as he slept off in bed. When the cops arrived at the Los Angeles residence, Brynn had already shot herself.
