China could see as many as 65 million new coronavirus cases per week by the end of June, a respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan said at a conference, CNBC TV reported. This worrying prediction is made about a new variant of Omicron virus called XBB. Currently, China is hardly reporting any cases of Covid-19. Here are three things that are happening: 

WHO Recommends Upgraded Boosters

A World Health Organization (WHO) advisory group recommends administering new booster shots with medication for the XBB.1.5 or XBB.1.16 variants. The vaccine makers are targeting these variants in their new vaccine release. So far, the vaccines have done a good enough job, and the spread of the virus is well-contained. The coronavirus daily new positive cases are generally in control, though some countries in Asia, like South Korea and several European countries, have reported considerably higher numbers. The spread of lesser lethal variants remains a threat, and the world community has to tackle it.

The Chinese Origins Controversy

The initial belief about the virus’s origins was that it belonged to Wuhan City in China and came due to the consumption of bats by humans. However, with time, the theories and origin stories have evolved. China vehemently denies any connection to the creation or spread of the virus. Some experts believe that it was developed in a lab in Wuhan. There are several other conspiracy theories present explaining the origins of the virus.

Coronavirus has been controlled globally. It is essential that the vaccination process continues and all necessary precautions are taken. If there is a spread, the area should be quarantined. Use of good hygienic practices and a face mask lower the risk of transmission of viruses in general. Occasional use of hand sanitizer also helps.
