Canada has been applauded several times on the global stage for its achievements. However, some Canadian wins are understated and forgotten and deserve more recognition. From science and technology to diplomacy, these wins linger in the shadows of global recognition. They deserve more applause and reveal a nation punching far above its weight.

Insulin Discovery

In 1921, Frederick Banting and Charles Best made a breakthrough discovery in treating diabetes. Their discovery offered hope to numerous people as they found that isolating insulin could reduce blood sugar. By 1922, these were being tested on many people, transforming a fatal condition into a manageable one.

Stem Cell Breakthrough

In 1961, James Till and Ernest McCulloch discovered stem cells, fundamentally altering medical science. Their work and experiments began with mouse bone marrow, laying the foundation for regenerative therapies. They noticed how the cells could self-renew and differentiate, opening doors to treatments for leukemia and other diseases.

IMAX Film Technology

While many enjoy movies in the IMAX cinema, only a handful know about this Canadian win. Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, and Robert Ker used oversized film projectors in the 1960s. This was done to create breathtaking visuals and offer a more immersive experience to the audience, eventually leading to the birth of IMAX.

The Canadarm

A futuristic invention that deserves more recognition, the Canadarm was designed by Spar Aerospace, a Canadian aerospace company. This mechanical arm performed tasks like deploying and assembling satellites, becoming integral to NASA’s Space Shuttle missions. Also known as the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS), it retired in 2011.

Peanut Butter

Wonderbra

Electron Microscope
