Two of Canada’s most familiar loyalty programs have become more valuable when used together. Tim Hortons and Canadian Tire officially launched their linked rewards partnership on September 2, allowing Canadians with both Tims Rewards and Triangle Rewards accounts to earn Canadian Tire Money on eligible Tim Hortons purchases without giving up the Tims points they normally collect. The basic benefit starts at 2% in Canadian Tire Money for eligible pre-tax Tims spending after the accounts are linked, while customers using a Triangle credit card and Tim Hortons’ Scan & Pay feature can reach the advertised rate of up to 5%. The arrangement connects a daily coffee-and-meal routine with a much broader retail rewards ecosystem, but earning the maximum requires understanding exactly how the different layers work.

The Partnership Is Now Officially Live

Canadian Tire Corporation and Tim Hortons first revealed plans for the loyalty partnership in September 2025, saying the two programs would become linkable sometime in 2026. That promise has now turned into an active program. As of September 2, registered members can connect their Triangle Rewards and Tims Rewards accounts and begin collecting Canadian Tire Money at participating Tim Hortons restaurants. Rather than creating a third rewards program, the companies have essentially built a bridge between two existing systems.

The potential audience is substantial. Canadian Tire says Triangle Rewards has more than 12 million members, while Tims Rewards has almost eight million. Canadian Press reported that 53% of Triangle Rewards customers were already enrolled in both programs when the partnership launched. That overlap helps explain the strategy: instead of persuading millions of people to join something unfamiliar, the companies can add value to accounts many Canadians already use. A morning coffee purchase can now contribute toward spending power elsewhere in the Canadian Tire retail network.

Simply Linking the Accounts Unlocks a 2% Earn Rate

The easiest version of the new benefit does not require a Triangle credit card. Once the two accounts are successfully linked, a member who scans a registered physical or digital Tims Rewards card at a participating restaurant earns 2% in Canadian Tire Money on eligible Tim Hortons spending before tax. The same linked benefit applies when a qualifying order is placed through the Tim Hortons app. Canadian Tire Money earned through the partnership is deposited into the member’s Triangle Rewards account.

Crucially, that earning happens in addition to the normal Tims Rewards system. Tim Hortons currently awards 10 Tims Rewards points for every dollar spent on eligible menu purchases. In practical terms, the customer is collecting two different rewards from the same qualifying transaction: Tims points intended for future Tim Hortons redemptions and Canadian Tire Money that can eventually be spent through participating Canadian Tire banners. For someone already scanning a Tims Rewards card on every coffee run, linking the accounts creates an additional reward stream without changing how the restaurant purchase itself is made.

Getting to 5% Requires Three Separate Earning Layers

The headline figure of up to 5% is not the automatic rate every linked member receives. It is assembled from three components. First comes the 2% linked-loyalty benefit on eligible pre-tax spending. A customer who then pays using a Triangle credit card earns another 2% in Canadian Tire Money based on the total Tim Hortons transaction after tax. Finally, using that Triangle credit card as the payment method through Scan & Pay in the Tim Hortons app adds another 1% on the eligible pre-tax portion.

Canadian Tire’s own example shows how the calculation works. It uses a hypothetical Ontario order with $4.43 in eligible pre-tax spending and a $5 post-tax total. Scanning a linked Tims account alone produces $0.09 in Canadian Tire Money. Paying with a Triangle credit card increases the total to $0.19. Using the card through Scan & Pay raises the reward to $0.23. The advertised 5% therefore represents the combined structure, rather than one simple percentage applied uniformly to the receipt.

Linking the Accounts Takes Only a Few Steps

Members can establish the connection through the Tim Hortons app by opening their account settings, choosing the Partnerships section and selecting the option to link a Triangle Rewards account. They then sign in to Triangle Rewards and accept the linked-loyalty terms. Tim Hortons also provides a web-based linking option, so downloading the app is not strictly required just to connect the accounts. Both rewards memberships must be registered for the linked benefit to work.

Once linking is completed, Tim Hortons says Canadian Tire Money can be earned automatically on the next qualifying purchase when the customer scans for Tims Rewards. People who prefer a physical Tims Rewards card are not necessarily left out, either. A registered physical card can continue to be scanned after the underlying Tims Rewards account has been connected to Triangle Rewards. The mobile app becomes more important for maximizing earnings, however, because the final 1% needed to reach the full advertised rate specifically depends on paying with a Triangle credit card through Scan & Pay.

Tims Points and Canadian Tire Money Stay Separate

Despite the accounts being connected, Tims Rewards points and Canadian Tire Money have not been merged into a common currency. Tims points continue to function under Tim Hortons’ existing redemption system and can be used for qualifying rewards at participating Tim Hortons restaurants. Canadian Tire Money goes into the Triangle Rewards account instead. Members cannot simply exchange one currency for the other, and linking the accounts does not mean Tims points can suddenly be earned while shopping at Canadian Tire.

Canadian Tire Money earned on a coffee or breakfast can instead move indirectly into a household’s broader spending budget. It can be redeemed on eligible purchases at Canadian Tire and participating banners including SportChek, Mark’s, L’Équipeur, Party City, Pro Hockey Life, Atmosphere and several sporting-goods chains. Canadian Tire Money cannot be redeemed back at Tim Hortons. That distinction matters because the partnership is designed around cross-shopping: a person may earn one reward at the restaurant while eventually spending it on automotive supplies, clothing, sporting equipment or household merchandise somewhere else.

Some Tims Purchases and Locations Are Excluded

The new earning opportunity does not apply universally across every product carrying the Tim Hortons name. Canadian Tire’s partnership information says certain purchases are excluded from the eligible pre-tax amount used for the linked-loyalty benefit. Examples include catering orders, Smile Cookies, bottled drinks, certain specialty products and merchandise. Existing Tims Rewards rules also contain exclusions covering categories such as gift-card loading and reloading, third-party delivery transactions, some retail products, donations and certain fees.

Location also matters. Canadian Tire warns that not every Tim Hortons participates, specifically noting that some restaurants in settings such as hospitals, airports and universities may be excluded. There is an unusual wrinkle for Triangle credit-card users: an item excluded from the 2% linked-loyalty calculation may still form part of the total post-tax transaction used to calculate the separate 2% Triangle credit-card earn. Canadian Tire illustrates that distinction using a Smile Cookie example. For rewards maximizers, the result is a system where different portions of the same receipt can be treated differently.

Not Every Part of the Reward Appears at the Same Time

A customer checking a Triangle balance immediately after buying breakfast may not see the entire reward at once. Tim Hortons says the standard 2% Canadian Tire Money earned on eligible pre-tax purchases from scanning Tims Rewards should be added to the Triangle account shortly after the transaction. The extra 1% earned when a Triangle credit card is used through Scan & Pay is also expected to arrive shortly after the purchase.

The credit-card portion follows a different timetable. The separate 2% in Canadian Tire Money generated from paying with an eligible Triangle credit card is expected to appear within five to seven days. That means someone using the maximum-earning configuration could initially see only part of the Canadian Tire Money associated with a purchase. Members can review the balance and transaction history through Triangle Rewards, where the credit-card component can be identified separately. Understanding that delay could prevent a routine coffee purchase from turning into an unnecessary customer-service question when the full reward does not appear immediately.

Linking the Programs Also Means Sharing Some Account Data

There is another part of account linking beyond points and Canadian Tire Money. Canadian Tire says members who connect the two programs consent to a limited amount of personal information being handled and shared between Canadian Tire Corporation, Tim Hortons and relevant employees, agents or service providers. The disclosed categories include account and linkage identifiers, whether accounts are linked, qualifying transaction and reward-earning information, timestamps and information needed for account administration.

The companies say that information can be used to administer the linked benefit, provide related rewards and services, support customers, conduct analytics, prevent fraud, meet legal requirements and enforce program terms. Each company continues to handle personal information under its own privacy policy. Members can unlink their accounts without cancelling either underlying rewards membership, although doing so ends participation in the cross-program benefit. The rules also limit linking or unlinking activity to two times within a rolling 24-hour period, providing another reason to avoid repeatedly disconnecting the programs just to experiment with settings.

The Scale Makes This More Than a Small Rewards Promotion

The commercial logic becomes clearer when the size of the two ecosystems is considered. The launch announcement puts Triangle Rewards membership above 12 million and Tims Rewards membership at almost eight million, while Tim Hortons operates nearly 4,000 restaurants across Canada. Canadian Tire Corporation says its broader retail network includes more than 1,600 retail and gasoline outlets. Linking the programs therefore creates opportunities for rewards to move across very different parts of Canadians’ spending routines.

The arrangement also arrives in an unusually crowded loyalty market. The 2025 LoyalT study, based on 15,000 Canadian respondents, found that Canadians belonged to an average of 22 loyalty programs but regularly used only nine. The same research found restaurant programs performing particularly strongly, including high mobile-app use and satisfaction. That makes everyday frequency valuable. Canadians may buy tires or sporting equipment only occasionally, but coffee, breakfast and lunch purchases can happen repeatedly throughout a week. For Canadian Tire, those smaller transactions create many more opportunities to keep Triangle Rewards present in a customer’s daily routine.

The Biggest Benefit Will Go to People Who Already Use Both Ecosystems

For the average linked member, the most straightforward benefit is the new 2% Canadian Tire Money earn layered on top of the Tims points already available. No Triangle credit card is necessary for that basic advantage. Moving from 2% toward the advertised maximum, however, changes the calculation. A Triangle credit card is needed for the additional 2%, and the Tim Hortons Scan & Pay feature is needed for the final 1%. Not everyone will want to restructure how they pay for coffee merely to capture every available percentage point.

For people already carrying a Triangle credit card and routinely ordering through the Tim Hortons app, the partnership is considerably more seamless. Those customers can potentially collect all three Canadian Tire Money components while still earning their normal Tims points. The important distinction is that the program rewards existing spending rather than making a Tim Hortons purchase cheaper at checkout. As with any loyalty arrangement, its practical value ultimately depends on whether the Canadian Tire Money and Tims points are redeemed on purchases that would have been made anyway.
