Fast Food giant McDonald’s Corp is temporarily closing its U.S. offices as it will inform corporate employees regarding layoffs as part of the company’s broader restructuring process, the Wall Street Journal reported. At the moment, there is no clarity about the number of employees that will be laid off.

According to an email cited by the Journal, McDonald’s U.S. employees and some international staff have been asked to work from home until Wednesday as the updates will be sent electronically. The staff has also been asked to cancel any meetings with the vendors during the period.

“During the week of April 3, we will communicate key decisions related to roles and staffing levels across the organization,” the email read.

In January, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinsk said in an internal memo that the company would review corporate staffing levels as part of an updated business strategy, which may result in layoffs in some areas while leading to expansion in others.

“We will evaluate roles and staffing levels in parts of the organization, and there will be difficult discussions and decisions ahead,” Kempszinski said. “Certain initiatives will be de-prioritized or stopped altogether. This will help us move faster as an organization while reducing our global costs and freeing up resources to invest in our growth.”

McDonald’s has over 150,000 worldwide performing different roles. 70% of their workforce is located outside of the U.S.

These layoffs are not the first of their kind by the fast food giant. While the company did not disclose the exact number of laid-off employees in recent years, their global headcount dropped to 205,000 in 2019 from 235,000 in 2017.

McDonald’s is not the first company to lay off employees in recent times. Several corporate giants, including Amazon and Meta, have let go of thousands of employees in recent months, and further downsizing is expected.

Many of these staff members were hired to overcome the temporary spike in demand created by Covid-19. With sales levels returning to normal as normalcy returns, many additional roles are no longer required. The current economic slowdown has also impacted some of these decisions.

McDonald’s is expected to announce the changes on Monday, April 3, 2023. However, there is no official word from the company on the matter.
