Airbus SE and Boeing Co. are concluding the year with a flurry of major orders, marking one of the most active purchasing periods in recent memory and propelling their production lines well into the next decade.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG announced on Tuesday its order for up to 200 short-haul aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing, valuing the deal at approximately $9 billion. Simultaneously, EasyJet Plc shareholders endorsed a 157-plane order for Airbus aircraft previously announced a few months ago.

Exceeding 100 aircraft orders, once considered a rarity in the aviation industry, has become increasingly commonplace this year due to the scarcity of delivery slots. Both Airbus and Boeing find themselves nearly sold out for the remainder of the decade on their most popular models, intensifying pressure on carriers to participate in the ordering frenzy or risk being relegated to the end of an extended line.

Experts believe that after three years of little spending from the industry, the floodgates are open again. With airlines enjoying great results, the demand for newer planes is ever-increasing.

As of now, Airbus has secured gross orders for more than 2,000 aircraft this year, surpassing its previous record set in 2014 when it sold almost 1,800 planes. Meanwhile, Boeing’s order book stands at about 1,200 aircraft.

Recent notable orders include Turkish Airlines placing a record order for up to 355 Airbus jets last week and a deal for 140 Airbus and Boeing planes from jet lessor Avolon Holdings a few days earlier. Both manufacturers are reportedly working to finalize additional large agreements before year-end.

While the majority of the recent activity has been centered around short-haul aircraft, the momentum has also extended to the market for larger widebody jets.

Boeing secured major commitments at the recent Dubai Air Show, where Emirates, a local champion, replenished its long-haul fleet.

Lufthansa, in detailing its plans, revealed that the A220s from the recent order will be utilized for its new City Airlines subsidiary. The airline has also reserved additional purchasing options, including 40 aircraft from the Airbus A320 family, with options for another 20 of the smaller A220.

This surge in airline orders reflects not only the rebound of the aviation industry but also a positive outlook driven by robust demand. With delivery slots filling up for the next decade, airlines are navigating a competitive landscape, securing their positions in an industry that has witnessed remarkable resilience and recovery in the face of recent challenges.
