Tesla Recalls Over 1.6 Million Cars in China Due to Autopilot and Lock Issues

Two main issues have emerged that require immediate attention from one of the world’s top EV makers.

Hood Lock Problem

The software fails to detect whether the vehicle’s hood is open, posing a potential safety hazard. To fix this problem, Tesla will send a remote software update, eliminating the need for a physical visit to a dealership or garage.

Autopilot Software Issues

The risk of accidents can be increased by drivers abusing the level 2 Combined Assistance Driving Function. Tesla aims to reduce the risk of collisions by addressing problems with the autosteer function. Additionally, 7,538 units of Models S and X will receive a software upgrade to prevent doors from unlocking during crashes.

Remote Updates

Tesla owners in China can breathe a sigh of relief; these updates will be delivered remotely, ensuring convenience and safety. The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) described this planned vehicle update as a recall, even though it will happen remotely. Tesla will release an over-the-air software update for 1,610,105 vehicles, including imported Models S and X and China-made Models 3 and Y cars made from 2014 to 2023.

Impact

Tesla’s recall comes less than a month after a similar recall in the US due to autopilot software issues. China’s BYD recently overtook Tesla’s electric car sales worldwide, adding to the pressure on the American electric car giant. Tesla has a significant consumer market in China, where subsidies are used to encourage the use of clean energy. China hosts Tesla’s first “gigafactory” in Shanghai, which delivered 947,000 vehicles in 2023.
